In the United States, grammar school now refers to a primary school, usually kindergarten through eighth grade, but originally a grammar school was so called because it taught students classical languages. In medieval England, grammar schools taught Latin and later Ancient Greek grammar. English and other languages soon followed, and eventually science, mathematics, geography, and history were included in the grammar school curriculum.
