My spelling is Wobbly. It’s good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.—Winnie-the-Pooh, from Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne
Welcome to Compass Rose Horizons.
We offer expert proofreading, editing, book design, eBook formatting, and transcription services.
Every writer should have an editor review a finished manuscript before it is presented to an audience. Whether you are a student in college, a professional columnist, or a business executive preparing an annual report, you need to have your work proofread by another person. To attempt it yourself can be difficult, as you’re simply too close to the material and may miss some very common, easy-to-overlook errors. Today’s business, academic, and professional worlds demand excellence in written communications — this has never been more important than in today’s era of self-publishing, where the competition to find and keep an audience is greater than ever. In order to maintain your professional reputation and improve your overall first impression — and to provide a pleasant experience for your readers — your work should be free from typos, grammatical errors, and structural problems. Our staff is comprised of a small group of English majors and journalists who have worked professionally as editors, proofreaders, and writers for twenty or more years. We never outsource our contracts overseas, and you will know exactly who you are working with. At Compass Rose, we believe that the editing process is a partnership between the author and the editor. By working together, we will help you finetune and shape your manuscript so that it will be ready for your audience.
Whether you just need another pair of eyes to give your manuscript a final read or require a more thorough review of your content and structure, we have a level of editing to match your needs. To see a summary of the different editing services we offer, go to our Rates page. You’ll also find a summary of our current monthly specials there!
“Joanne Asala fine-tuned the text with exceptional care and skill, and she put up with a rather demanding author with an abundance of grace and good humor.”—David Moody, The Unconditioned Mind: J. Krishnamurti and the Oak Grove School, Quest Books.
You may send your document over the Internet or through the mail. We primarily work with Microsoft® Word, Adobe InDesign®, and Adobe Acrobat® (PDFs) files. Depending on how your document is submitted, we can return it via e-mail, burned onto a CD, or in the mail. If you send your document as an MS Word file, you will get it back as clean, corrected text. You will also receive a marked copy using MS Word’s track changes feature. If you send a hard copy, we can only return a marked-up hard copy back to you. If submitting a document more than 50 pages in length, a deposit of 50 percent is required before we can begin work.
All correspondences (including e-mails) and materials will be held in strict confidence. We will not share your personal information or the details of your project with anyone. In addition, we always offer a five-percent discount if you pay for your entire project in advance via PayPal! We also accept checks and money orders, but a check must clear before work can begin. Please see our Make a Payment page for payment options.
Editing and proofreading are not all we do. Whether you need to convert a book to an eBook, transcribe your audio notes, create a cover and interior layout for a print publication, or type out a handwritten manuscript, we have someone who can help you get the job done.
The job of an editor in a publishing house is the dullest, hardest, most exciting, exasperating, and rewarding of perhaps any job in the world.—John Hall Wheelock
